Letter from the Editor

I am proud to present the 2019-2020 edition of the Mindful Journal of Ethics. Like always, this edition of Mindful features the diverse, insightful and inspiring work of University of Toronto students. Writing about ethical issues is no easy task, and the writers featured in our 2019-2020 journal address complicated and dynamic topics with intriguing arguments and dynamic perspectives.

Typically, Mindful is published in print rather than online. However, due to recent events, the publishing of Mindful has been delayed and has ultimately made the necessary (and temporary) switch to become an online publication. Despite the change in publishing, the ethos of Mindful remains the same: ask questions, identify problems and work towards solutions. The work featured in this edition does precisely that: from the ethics and implications of the #Metoo movement, to the ethics of Canadian immigration and refugee reforms, to the question of dignity in pluralistic liberal democratic states, the essays featured in this edition acknowledge important ethical problems and work towards possible solutions.

Carefully selected by our dedicated Masthead, these essays demonstrate the inherent value of asking ethical questions and argue for the necessity of implementing ethics into everyday conversations. And it seems now, more than ever before, our everyday thinking has become steeped in ethical questions. What is our responsibility to one another? How do we view ourselves in relation to our society? What values guide our lives and why are they important? How can we work towards a better, safer future and what does that future even look like? The essays featured in the 2019-2020 edition of the Mindful Journal of Ethics, tackle these challenging questions by highlighting diverse issues, both domestically in Canada, as well as globally.

I would like to thank the dedicated masthead, made up of the editorial team as well as the Trin-One peer reviewers, all of whom worked hard to bring this year's issue to life. I would also like to thank the Associate Director of the Ethics, Society and Law program at Trinity College, Professor Simone Davis, for overseeing the publication of this journal, as well as the other faculty advisors who helped during the editing process. Without the work of these important people, Mindful would not be what it is today. Finally, I would like to thank the talented writers who have allowed us to share their work. It is our hope at Mindful that the work featured in our journal will facilitate important ethical questions, foster ethical discussions and work towards the implementation of necessary ethical changes.
